After two and a half
years, we have seen our internet and intranet websites develop, slowly
but steadily (~3.5 GBytes of total data, ~1.6GBytes / ~4000 pages
consulted a week). Rather than developing plug-ins, we could have
focalized on creating web contents, but our relative focus on enhancing
fine-tuned content creation tools has started to show mid and long-term
advantages: content creation is increasingly being taken in care by
non-webmaster users, thus creating more and better than what we could
have done as webmasters. With the use of this tool, web-publishing
litteracy has been enhanced for all our IntRad users. While the main
user-complaint was the 'always-changing' interface, the tool has
recently reached maturity, and the user manual and group courses have
started changing this view. Due to user demand, new workshops have been
agended.
The last months have let us gain
considerable web-developing experience, thus easing design, creation
and expertise of web-based publishing and application creation. Most
new functionalities or enhancements will however still almost
exclusively be realized following direct request by the Department's
users. Today, we have a strong and sturdy open-source application
platform on which we can construct.
Moreover, since january 2003, most
open-source developments made inhouse where included in the open-source
community BolinOS platform, making IntRad the major developer for the
BolinOS platform as of June 2003, but this may soon change, for the
better. Exportation of our source code enhancements to the worldwide
open-source community has provided us with many feedbacks, bug-reports,
enhancements, comments and contacts; today many other groups are
studying the tool, while some have already chosen it (in our Hospital,
and worldwide: 15'000+ installer downloads in more than 100 countries
according to BolinOS.net statistics). Thanks to this mode of
distribution, the platform is gaining access to other open-source
projects' functionalities as the world-renoun 'PHP-MyAdmin' tool for
database management. Integration of Palm OS handeld connectivity tools,
as the 'Medical Files' or 'Palm DB' plug-ins for both Palm OS and web
authoring is another example. We are also studying the integration of
java-based open source image-manipulation software. The future will
surely reserve us many good surprises, as many of us, IntRad / BolinOS
users, are willing to use this simple and efficient web workhorse.
Thanks again to all the BolinOS community and those that have supported
the early IntRad days... :-)
This site, including online applications, is built using our co-developed open source CMS named BolinOS, you can contact us for more info about this shared project.
